A series of very short poems written during a 10-week stay in Governor’s Bay, New Zealand, and here printed beautifully by the great printer Claire Van Vliet. The binding is double-spined, and each page opens in the opposite direction to its neighbour. Instead of being sewn, the folios are held together by strips of handmade paper woven thru the sheets, and the colors of the four papers used in the book work very quietly and harmoniously together. When all the pages are opened out, there is a photograph of Governor’s Bay taken by Van Vliet a couple of years before I had sent her the poems, and from the very spot where the newly built house in which I was staying had been built. The colophon puts it this way: ‘The photograph of Governor’s Bay in New Zealand was taken by Claire Van Vliet, prepared in Photoshop & printed on Hahnemühle Digital paper by Fletcher Manley in Lancaster New Hampshire. The text is handset Trump Mediæval printed on Barcham Green’s Chatham who also made the Renaissance IV used for the strips; the structure was inspired by Elizabeth Steiner’s Gioia II and executed by Audrey Holden in an edition of 150 [copies]’. Page size 145x180mm opening out to 555mm (approx). US $150 a copy. Order from The Janus Press, 101 Schoolhouse Road, Newark, Vermont 05871, U.S.A. 2003.
